Got questions? We’ve got the answers!

  • Is there an age limit?
Everyone over 18 is welcome and there is no upper age limit.
  • Do I have to audition?
No! And you don’t have to sing on your own, either!
  • Do I need to read music?
No! Songs are taught by ear using lyric sheets – the choir leader sings the parts and teaches them to each group.
  • Do I need to have sung before?
No! You just need to love singing and be keen to have a go! Most of our members hadn’t any previous experience of singing before they joined. If you like singing along to the radio, you’ll probably be familiar with lots of the songs already.
Your free taster session
  • What happens at the taster session?
You’ll take part in a regular choir session. The choir leader will greet you, give you a name badge and have a brief chat with you to welcome you to the session. She’ll then introduce you to some of the other choir members in your group who’ll show you what to do and answer any questions you may have. Rest assured, the spotlight won’t be on you – you’ll be singing in a group and definitely won’t have to sing on your own
  • How will I know which part to sing?
When you come along for your taster session, the choir leader will put you in the group that best suits you, based on your speaking voice (which gives her a good idea of whether your voice is high or low). She will also consider any singing experience you may have. It’s fine if you’re a complete beginner though! We want you to feel comfortable so you can sing in a relaxed way and enjoy the session. There is no audition.

Your weekly session
  • Can I swap sessions?
Yes! If you can’t make your usual session due to shift working, caring responsibilities or other commitments, you can come to whichever session fits in with your calendar during a particular week. It’s a great way of getting to know more choir members, too!
  • What if I am going on holiday during term time?
You’re welcome to come to extra sessions before you go and when you come back. You can use our ChoirMate app to keep up to date with the songs – perfect for boring flights!
  • Do I have to come every week?
Showing up to your weekly session will give you the best experience of being in the choir. As well as having fun learning new songs and being given expert tips and tricks to help, you’ll get to know the other choir members during the social break halfway through a session. Building on your knowledge of the songs week by week will give you confidence and helps the whole group to sound amazing! The sense of achievement you’ll feel when we master a song and everyone sings it together will be awesome!
ChoirJam songs
  • What sort of songs will we be singing?
Uplifting songs, mainly accompanied by backing tracks, with an occasional a cappella song to mix it up a bit. We usually do 3 or 4 new songs each term, as well as revisiting some old faves. We love a good pop song, whether it’s a 60’s classic, 80’s chart-topper or Dua Lipa! You’ll find a bit of folk and jazzy stuff thrown in too, just to keep you on your toes!
  • Can I sing along with the songs at home?
Yes! We have the brilliant ChoirMate app which many members like to use to sing along at home or in the car
How to pay for your ChoirJam membership
  • How do I join ChoirJam?
After your free taster session we will send you an email with a link to join ChoirJam and set up your Direct Debit.

  • How much is ChoirJam?
ChoirJam is £31.75 per month payable by Direct Debit. Total fees are £381 per year. There are 35-36 sessions per year.

  • Do I have to pay every month, even outside of term-times?
Yes, the annual fee of £381 is divided into twelve instalments so you pay the same amount each month, making it easier to budget.

  • Do I get a refund if I miss a session?
No. If your choir leader cancels a session, it will be rescheduled or run by another choir leader.

  • How are my fees calculated if I join part way through a term?
Your fees are calculated on a pro-rata basis from your joining date.

ChoirJam Performances
  • Do I have to take part in the performances?
No! Performing is optional and there is no pressure at all to do so. Some choir members never do; for others, it’s their absolute favourite part of being in the choir! Sometimes it can take a while to feel confident enough to perform but generally once people have done it, they’ve well and truly got the bug!
  • Is there a choir uniform?
For performances we wear a red ChoirJam T Shirt (short or long sleeve) and black bottoms.
