ChoirShow 2!

ChoirShow 2!
The live YouTube concert with an impressive lineup!

Sunday 1st November marks the release of CHOIRSHOW 2 – a brilliant live broadcast of virtual choir videos recorded by 14 different choirs INCLUDING CHOIRJAM from across the UK, in support of Keynsham charity ‘The Music Man Project’.

This month 250 singers from various choirs have been busy rehearsing and recording their individual performances, prior to them being carefully edited together to create a wonderful evening concert.  This autumn look forward to watching performances from children’s choirs, community choirs, show choirs and a chamber choir, all brought together for CHOIRSHOW 2.

On the night, there will be special LIVE Green Room of the choir directors, a live interval performance and the audience will be able to share comments, best wishes and celebrate using the YouTube chat function  – and even join in with some short bits of community singing!

CHOIRSHOW 2 is organised by Matt Finch, musical director for Bath Light Operatic Group and MD for BLOG at the Bath Theatre Royal, and is a direct result of his 9 choirs all being unable to perform for the past eight months.

Matt says, “Most of my choirs have been rehearsing on zoom since lockdown began, but with no real purpose or performance to work toward. Some of the choirs began to spontaneously make virtual videos and we started sharing them on Facebook, mainly for family and friends. The feedback was brilliant, with people really enjoying them, but I soon realised there was just not enough people seeing them. The videos were great and can take hours and hours to record, edit and produce and so deserved a much bigger audience! I wanted a way of celebrating the choirs’ achievements and an online concert, in collaboration with other UK choirs seemed to be the perfect vehicle and the best way forward”.

CHOIRSHOW 2 is in fact a sequel. The first CHOIRSHOW was held in July and had 14 different choirs from the south of England coming together to share their performances and watch online. The show had over 1.2K views, sold 350 tickets and raised over £1,000 for charity. After such a roaring success, Matt decided he had to do another one.

The event is ticketed, and the show will be broadcast live on YouTube at 7.30pm on Sunday 1st November 2020. Tickets are £8.50 per household and can be purchased via Eventbrite.

CHOIRSHOW has set up a special code for each choir involved. This code gives audience members £1.00 off their ticket and donates 25% of the rest of their ticket to the choir of their choice. To support CHOIRJAM use the special code CJC. At the end of the show there will also be a big virtual bucket  shake in aid of The Music Man Project in Keynsham.

“The Music Man is a music club for adults with learning disabilities and is a place where students can go to share their musical tastes and enjoy making music with friends, as well as learning about musical performance, improvisation, and composition,” explains Matt. “Through the coronavirus crisis, the charity has seen a significant drop in income, is facing many new challenges and has recently set up an appeal page on Just Giving https://www.justgiving.com/fundraising/choirshow2 . All fundraising is hugely appreciated, and this is a chance for us to make a real difference to many local musicians”.

For audience members CHOIRSHOW 2 is a great opportunity to enjoy an actual concert, connect with and hear many different styles of choirs from around the world, and support choirs by giving them much needed choral singing time.

ChoirJam raises £1,675 for Help Bristol’s Homeless

The final figure is now in… on Sat 5 October we raised an incredible £1,675.48 for the Help Bristol’s Homeless Charity at our Big Spring Street Gig!  Thank you to everyone who bought tickets and gave donations, we very much appreciate it ❤️

On what was a very emotional evening in St John’s Church, Keynsham, we performed 2 sets including songs by George Ezra, The Drifters, Miley Cyrus and Blondie, among others, accompanied by our fabulous CJ Band.  The event was a resounding success attracting over 250 people and with everyone involved clearly having a great time! The audience soon realised they were going to be in for a treat and rewarded the choir with a standing ovation at the end of the night.

During the evening, representatives from HBH, Zoradi Tucker and Rob Earnshaw, both took the opportunity to talk more about the charity’s unique work. Rob spoke movingly from personal experience, after finding himself homeless as a result of alcohol addiction and mental health problems. Originally a resident at HBH’s container site on Malago Road, he described how as an ex-professional chef he is now managing the new site on Spring Street and doing the cooking.

Rob goes on to say, ‘I now feel so happy and contented. This is entirely due to the efforts of Jasper Thompson. None of this would be possible for us if it wasn’t for the drive and commitment of HBH. Jasper has a sound understanding of homelessness and the issues we face because he asks the relevant questions and listens to our answers’.

Zoradi, HBH Trustee explains, ‘It’s been a busy summer, in July we started the move from our original site on Malago Road to our new site on Spring Street. We now have 15 micro-flats converted from shipping containers, the overnight bus for temporary accommodation, a shower block, kitchen/dining areas, a laundry room and an office to enable admin for the running of the charity. This has required a lot of assistance in getting the site connected and we could not have done it without all the hard work from our amazing volunteers and the Bristol community who have so kindly given up their time and used their skills to help us’.

The Spring Street container village is now nearing completion and will soon be up and running. HBH will continue the mission to change the face of homelessness in Bristol. If you think you could help, get involved or would like to make a donation, please contact Zoradi Tucker on contact@helpbristolshomeless.org or go to www.helpbristolshomeless.org

The Rematch! Sat 17 March 2018

We’re teaming up once again with The Magnificent AK47 men’s choir after they made the long, arduous journey over from eastern parts last year.  Lowering the tone with their deep, Georgian-inspired harmonies and serious silliness, those Magnificent Men of Ashton Keynes and their multi-hatted singing machine will be taking to the stage to prove they can truly live up to the claim of perhaps being the best all bloke singing troupe ever to escape from the depths of North, North Wiltshire.

This time we’re on neutral territory in St Sampson’s handsome church in Cricklade.

There will be a bar, lots of blokes with hats, us and the amazing CJ band! What’s not to like?

Tickets available here.

ChoirJam hit right notes for Music Therapy

Fundraising CertificateChoirJam raised the roof and funds for the MHA’s Music Therapy Appeal at a concert on 11th March at St John’s Church in Keynsham.

The 80-strong ensemble, accompanied by their live band, performed a selection of pop tunes from across the decades.  They were joined by The Magnificent AK47 men’s choir from Wiltshire, known for their humorous approach with songs such as “Man Flu”.  The concert culminated in a joint finale with a rendition of Elbow’s ‘One Day Like This’, and it’s fair to say there wasn’t a dry eye in the house.

The concert  raised funds for the MHA’s Music Therapy Appeal that aims to raise £22,000 to provide pioneering music therapy to all residents who are living with dementia at its Horfield Lodge care home in Bristol.

Using Music Therapy, specially trained music therapists can regulate residents’ emotions to alleviate symptoms and identify their possible causes. Music Therapy is becoming increasingly important as it can modify a patient’s behaviour by significantly alleviating agitation and even reduce a patient’s reliance on drugs.

Zoe Steer, Community Fundraising Manager for the West said; “We’re delighted ChoirJam chose to support the Music Therapy Appeal at their concert.  Music Therapy has such a positive impact on the lives of our residents who are living with dementia and who have been able to benefit already from the service at Horfield Lodge. But we want more people to have access to this amazing service which is why raising this money is so important.”

ChoirJam supports Oxfam’s Big Bra Hunt

Oxfam bra certificate all Jammers 001Well done Jammers for once again supporting(!) Oxfam’s Big Bra Hunt this year.  Yes, you dug out all your old bras that no longer fit, the ones you no longer wear and the ones that have got a bit…um..well.. baggy!  Not to mention some obviously questionable buying decisions, but don’t worry, all donations were anonymous!!

Over 150 of your bras are now winging their way over to Senegal to be sold in Frip Ethique, Oxfam’s social enterprise.  Most of the workers there are women who sort and sell clothes donated to Oxfam enabling them to earn a living with good job security, sickness benefits and a pension.  Over 500 local market traders buy stock from Frip Ethique and run their own businesses.  The profits are also invested in Oxfam’s work fighting poverty in Senegal.

Thank you all.

Retiring collection for MHA Music Therapy Appeal Bristol.  MHA provides valuable music therapy sessions for people living with dementia.  Even when many memories can be hard to retrieve, songs and music are especially easy to recall.  Music therapy gives people living with dementia a chance to express the emotions that are within them, often after their ability to communicate verbally has gone. The group and one-to-one sessions MHA provides gives them a safe space to show their innermost feelings.  With your support, MHA can bring the benefits of music therapy to even more of the residents in their specialist dementia care homes in Bristol and Bath.
